Every year beginning in January the island of Cozumel really becomes very vibrant and more colorful than any other time of year.  For those of you coming to Cozumel regulary, and by that I mean at least once a year.  You may have had the chance to experience Cozumel during this portion of the high season.  Cozumel eventsFor  those of you who haven’t had a chance to travel to Cozumel during this time of year we’ll delve a little deeper into what great Things to do in Cozumel there are during January and February.  Yes you may know we are talking about Carnaval in Cozumel!

If you haven’t had a chance to come down to Cozumel on a cruise or for a week you have most likely still heard about Carnaval. While you may not have heard about Carnaval in Cozumel you most likely have heard about Carnaval in places like Rio de Janeiro, Brazil where their Carnaval celebration is likely the largest of all the Carnaval celebrations worldwide as they hold the record for the largest number of people in attendance.

While Carnaval in Cozumel is not as big as the one in Brazil it is still nevertheless one the largest of the Carnaval celebrations in all of Mexico.  With plenty of great Cozumel Activities and attractions throughout the month all leading up to the main Carnaval Parade, it is definitely worth putting on your things to do in Cozumel list.  We’ll get a little bit  more into what Carnaval is all about and what kinds of things there are to do not just for tourists but for locals as well.

What’s Carnaval?

So if you have heard a little about Carnaval but still don’t know what the celebration is actually all about let’s get into Cozumel activitiesthat right now.  Carnaval is a tradition which has been taking place throughout the world for hundreds of years and has many different meanings throughout the world.  With the main events generally taking place before the Christian season of lent, the main events include costumes and generally extravagant parades.  In many cases traditionally, Carnaval was a reversal ritual in which social roles were reversed and also as a way to celebrate the end of winter as the first festival of spring.

In Cozumel, Carnaval has been celebrated since about 1873.  Cozumel truly comes alive during the Cozumel events leading up to the Carnaval main parades which are held over 3 days and will be the beginning of February.  This celebration is an explosion of Color and music.  The entire main street on the waterfront is decorated and festive. Cozumeleños here are very excited about Carnaval.

So it’s time once again for Carnaval in Cozumel and this years events are expected to be bigger than years past as the local city authorities have this year moved the events to the Park right in front of City Hall. what to do in CozumelYears past these events have generally been held in a local venue called “Moby Dick”, which is much further back into town.  This was done in the hopes of involving more visitors to the island in the events leading up to the Carnaval Parades.

Carnaval in Cozumel events include many different activities for all different age groups and families included as there are dance competitions and Kind and Queen elections for many different age groups. Expect the parade to be a big street party as the streets will be lined with merry attendees all eager to get a good spot to watch the large floats pass by.
